About 1,200 customers still without gas in Martinsburg

August 12, 2006

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - About 1,200 natural gas customers in Martinsburg still were waiting for their service to be returned Friday, according to the operations manager for Mountaineer Gas Co.

As of Friday at 4 p.m., the Charleston, W.Va., company had restored service to 2,200 customers, Thomas Westfall said.

"We have to turn the meter on, then go in the house and light the appliances," said Westfall, who was confident some affected residents are on vacation or out of town.

The disruption to the company's natural gas service was caused by a malfunction at a regulator station while maintenance work was under way, Westfall has said.

Since Wednesday, company crews have been attempting to meet up with customers to manually restore service, and were expected to work until Friday at midnight.
