August 11, 2006

A Hagerstown woman was ordered in Washington County District Court on Aug. 3 to serve one year of unsupervised probation after she was found guilty of abandoning a domestic animal, the Humane Society of Washington County said in a written release.

Mandy Maistros, of 246 West Side Ave., was given probation before judgment, fined $100 plus court costs and ordered to relinquish her boxer to the Humane Society, according to court documents and the release.

Maistros called the Humane Society on May 16 to report a stray dog outside her house. When an animal control officer arrived, neighbors told the officer that the dog, a boxer named Marley, belonged to Maistros, the release states.

The officer tried calling the woman and knocking on her door, but no one answered and the dog was taken to the Humane Society, the release states.

After some investigation, it was determined, "Mrs. Maistros had put the dog out on the street and called to have it picked up," the release states.
