A good man, gone too young

August 11, 2006

He was just 25, but according to family and friends, he was a gentleman, a devoted father and a good buddy who was always willing to help someone in need.

Army Staff Sgt. Stephen A. Seale had hoped to have a career in the military, but his dream ended tragically on Sunday when the Grafton, W.Va., soldier and two others in his unit were killed by a bomb while riding in a Humvee.

It is a story that is becoming all too familiar and sad, because the young soldiers who pay the ultimate price are usually more mature than their peers, devoted to their country and to bringing American-style democracy to a land that had only known dictatorship for 20 years.

The war in Iraq has become controversial, but the soldiers there are not the policy-makers or those who create battle strategy.

Whatever anyone believes about the war, we cannot fail to honor those who make the ultimate sacrifice.

In this case, the best way to do that would be to contribute to a fund set up for his 3-year-old daughter, Isabel Grace Seale.

If you can help, please write checks to: Isabel Grace Seale, Bank of Charles Town, P.O. Box 7, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425.
