Cultural festival brings on the music

August 10, 2006|by TIFFANY ARNOLD

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Bands, bands and more bands will perform during the 14th annual African American Cultural & Heritage Festival at the Wright Denny Intermediate School this year.

At least three marching bands are slated to perform at the festival, Friday, Aug. 11, through Sunday, Aug. 13, as well as musicians and singers such as The Rise Band and the all-female doo-wop crooners of the Signatures.

But the music isn't just for idle listeners, said organizer George Rutherford, president of the Jefferson County branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People - the group hosting the event. A mass "electric slide" time is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, so bring your dancing shoes.

In addition to food vendors and a parade on Saturday, other activities include a Moonbounce and pony rides for children, and a gospel program on Sunday. For more information, call Rutherford, 304-725-9610.
