Vehicles enhance mountain scenery at annual car show

MERCERSBURG, PA. - Picturesque mountains usually draw visitors to the Saunderosa Park and Campground on Pa. 456, but this weekend, hundreds of cars, trucks and motorcycles are expected to add to the appeal.

Registration fees for those vehicles will be given to the Classic Car Group for Children, which collects money annually for terminally ill children, event organizer Buddy Harbaugh said.

"They save that money all year long. At the end of the year, they make a large donation to Dream Come True," he said.

Best of Show Auto Restoration of Greencastle, Pa., and the campground have teamed for seven years to host the event. The 200 to 250 vehicles displayed last year drew more than 2,000 people, Harbaugh said.

Best of show awards, with 6-foot-tall trophies, went to John Edwards of Hagerstown for his 1937 Chevrolet pickup truck and Ulysses Reynolds of Annandale, Va., for his 1938 Chevrolet sedan.

More than 100 awards and door prizes are available this year, according to Harbaugh.

"This year, there is a Saunderosa pick award, where the campers vote for a vehicle," he said.

The types of vehicles already registered range from antiques to imports.

"It's a little bit of everything. It's actually quite a variety," Harbaugh said. The muscle cars are especially popular right now, he said.

The $3 admission fee not only allows visitors to meander among the vehicles, but also gives them access to the new swimming pool, said Dee Saunders, who owns the campground with her husband, Kent.

"We'll be having food vendors," Dee Saunders said. Those include chicken barbecue, soft pretzels and a firefighters' stand, she said.

Harbaugh is hoping a fair-weather day will highlight the natural beauty at the site.

"I think a lot of people just like to come down into the mountains and valley," Dee Saunders said.

"A lot of people say it's such a beautiful place to have a show," Harbaugh said.
