HAGERSTOWN - The Hagerstown Fire Department will be able to sponsor a fireworks display Saturday at a Hagerstown Suns game, following approval Tuesday night from the Hagerstown City Council.

Council members Kristin B. Aleshire, Kelly S. Cromer and Lewis C. Metzner voted in favor of the show. Councilwoman Penny M. Nigh voted against it.

Councilwoman Alesia D. Parson-McBean was not at the meeting.

The fire department intends to use fireworks that were confiscated from people who did not have the proper permits to use them. Those fireworks otherwise would be destroyed by the Maryland State Fire Marshal's office.

This fireworks show would be a way to promote fireworks safety, according to the fire department.

A licensed fireworks technician is willing to do the show and to secure the proper permit and insurance.

More than 900 underprivileged, disadvantaged or disabled children are scheduled to attend the game.

Nigh said the Suns are not supposed to host three consecutive fireworks shows. At its November 29, 2005, meeting, the council approved the Hagerstown Suns 2006 fireworks show schedule. No more than one set of back-to-back fireworks shows were approved.

The Suns have scheduled fireworks shows Friday and Sunday.

Nigh said she wanted to stick firm with the schedule, which was approved keeping in mind people who live near Municipal Stadium.

According to the fire department, the confiscated fireworks are consumer-grade and do not make as much noise as the fireworks normally used at the shows, although they do make some noise.
