Thousands lose gas service in Martinsburg

August 09, 2006|by MATTHEW UMSTEAD

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Gas service to about 3,000 customers in the Martinsburg area was disrupted Tuesday morning and it was not immediately clear when repairs would be completed, a Mountaineer Gas Co. official said.

"We're not really giving out any time right now," said the company official, who described the problem as a malfunction in the regulator feed.

Martinsburg Fire Department Capt. David Brining said he was told service could be restored by late Thursday or early Friday.

"They're shutting the service off until they get the problem corrected," Brining said.

The disruption was discovered at about 11 a.m. at the fire station, when kitchen appliances and a water heater at the station off North Raleigh Street did not work, Brining said.

Several restaurants reportedly were forced to shut down or were unable to serve hot food to customers.
