A fair for the young folks

August 08, 2006

If you need your faith in the younger generation renewed, you're in luck. This week you can attend the 59th edition of the Berkeley County (W.Va.) Youth Fair.

What makes this event unique is its focus on young people ages 8 to 21.

To participate, young people choose a project from a number of areas, including livestock raising, cooking, gardening, computers, small-engine repair, natural resources, cake decorating and photography.

Completing a project involves following a project book and giving a speech about their project. Then, during the fair, the projects are judged and ribbons are awarded to those who present the best ones.

The event is being held at the fair's 140-acre site off Golf Course Road and will run through Saturday. A list of activities will be printed in each day's Herald-Mail newspapers and is also available on our Web site at www.herald-mail.com.

There will be a number of attractions, including a bull-riding event at 8 p.m. Thursday and fireworks at 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

But the best attraction will be the young exhibitors, showing off the fruits of their labor and what can be accomplished with some hard work, determination and a family's help.
