Halfway Lions Club celebrates education night

The Lions Club of Halfway celebrated its annual education night recently.

The Lions are one of the official scholarship sponsors for the Miss Washington County-Miss Western Maryland Scholarship Foundation, which is committed to giving scholarship assistance to young women ages 18 to 24.

The Rev. Jan Dorsey introduced Miss Washington County Carrie Shank and Miss Western Maryland Autumn Smith. Both young women spoke briefly regarding their platforms.

Western Maryland's Outstanding Teen, Lindsay Hanna, was introduced by pageant Executive Director Barbara Carson.

She also spoke briefly and described her platform for the Lions.

Archie Van Norden awarded the club's two annual scholarships in the amount $1,000 each to Lindsay Fletcher of Williamsport High School and Laura Forsythe of South Hagerstown High School.

Stan Johnson presented the SARA (Student Recognition Achievement) Awards, given for academic excellence, good citizenship, initiative, self-motivation and community service to Marisa Bender of South Hagerstown High School and Ellisee Frazier of Williamsport High School. A total of 18 SARA awards were presented during the year.
