Greencastle to host regional firemen's convention

August 02, 2006|by JENNIFER FITCH

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - The Greencastle Rescue Hose Co. this week is hosting the 105th Cumberland Valley Volunteer Firemen's Association convention with attendees expected to travel from several states.

"We expect 100 to 150 (people) to register over the three-day period," said Ray Mowen, chairman of the 15-member organizing committee that has been working on plans for two years.

Participants from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Delaware will discuss new practices, while also holding events that are open to the public. Those include a parade, memorial service, flag ceremony and an exhibit of antique firetrucks.

"We'll have antique fire apparatus come in for a static display," Mowen said. The display will include apparatus from the days when it was pulled by hand up through 1985, he said.

That is scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Rescue Hose Co. Special Events Center, 407 S. Washington St.

The 1 p.m. Saturday parade has at least 90 pieces of fire apparatus registered and will travel on downtown streets from Carlisle Street to South Washington Street.

Thursday morning boasts an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. at the fire station and a memorial service at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Brethren.

"We'll eulogize members who died in the past year," Mowen said.

The Rescue Hose Co. last hosted the convention in 1995 but hosted several before that. Its first foray as host was in 1911, Mowen said.

"Some of us have been going to these for a number of years. We have some old friends ... and we hope to make some new friends," he said.

Camaraderie is an important part of the convention, he said. That will be the focus of two banquets hosted by the Rescue Hose Co.

Visitors from the association, which has more than 1,100 members, reserved accommodations at local hotels and motels, according to Mowen.
