HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - A 21-year-old man drowned Saturday after jumping from a rock ledge into water at a quarry, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department said.
Deputy S.M. Holz said police were called to the quarry off Millville Road, near Harpers Ferry, about 4:40 p.m., along with a dive team from the Independent Fire Co.
The body of Thomas C. Harmison of Hedgesville, W.Va., was found underwater, about 30 feet down, Holz said. Harmison was pronounced dead at 5:20 p.m.
Holz said Harmison was with four friends, all about 20 to 25 years old.
They had entered the quarry property, even though it's posted against trespassing and has locked gates preventing vehicles from getting in, Holz said.
