July 24, 2006

Washington County Public Schools has issued a reminder about guidelines pertaining to summer activities such as practices for band and sports.

In a press release from the school system, Ed Masood, supervisor of Fine Arts, Health and Physical Education, and Athletics, said the guidelines are in place to ensure the health, safety and welfare of students participating in outdoor extracurricular activities during the summer.

The following guidelines are to be followed for all Washington County Public Schools summer activities involving students:

· No student activities are allowed on school property when the school system is closed, unless authorization has been requested and approved prior to the activity.

· All full band practice sessions and all full team athletic practices in the summer are restricted to two, two-hour sessions outside, whether on or off school property.

· Special attention should be paid to the heat and humidity index, which is expressed as Code Red, Code Orange and Code Purple, and issued by the Environmental Protection Agency.

· Directors, coaches and supervisors are to adjust practice sessions as weather conditions change, with mandatory water breaks and hydration. If Code Purple exists, all practices are to be canceled.
