Steer leads police on chase

July 20, 2006|by ERIN JULIUS

Hagerstown City Police spent Wednesday night trying to corral a cow, Sgt. Fred Wolford said.

A small steer apparently got loose as it was being loaded into a truck at Four States' Livestock Sales, Wolford said.

The animal was loose in the residential area around First Street and Oak Street, off Wilson Boulevard, he said.

As police were trying to corral the animal, it knocked down two officers. One of the officers "has a pretty bad laceration on his wrist" as a result of the encounter with the steer, Wolford said. That officer is being treated at a hospital, he said.

Police might have to sedate the steer, Wolford said about 10:30 p.m.

"Hopefully, we can get it without hurting it," Wolford said.
