The YMCA might return to Martinsburg, W.Va., after a 70-year absence.
On Wednesday, the Hagerstown YMCA's Board of Directors met and voted to form an ad hoc committee to "look at the possibility of a YMCA in Martinsburg," said Michael Flicek, executive director of Hagerstown's YMCA.
Flicek stressed that the authorization of the committee marks the "first step" to a YMCA in Martinsburg.
"There is a lot to be determined," Flicek said.
The YMCA's committee also will work with community leaders in Martinsburg to discuss the needs of that city, Flicek said.
U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito is spearheading the push for a YMCA in Martinsburg. A needs assessment survey conducted in May was expected to be presented at Wednesday's board meeting, Flicek said last week.
Flicek has said previously that Martinsburg is in need of an indoor pool.
Former Martinsburg City Council member Rick Wachtel, now chairman of the Eastern West Virginia Airport Authority, said last week he supports providing land for a YMCA at the airport's industrial park.
