Worthington, O'Neill lead Hagerstown 'A'

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Chase Worthington and J.J. O'Neill combined to pitch a one-hitter Wednesday night as Hagerstown 'A' beat Chambersburg 'B' 11-1 in the first round of the PONY Sectional Tournament at Greenvillage Youth Park.

Worthington and O'Neill also each hit a home run.

Hagerstown 'A' plays Chambersburg 'A' today at 6 p.m. in a winners' bracket game. Chambersburg 'B' will face Brunswick tonight at 8 in the losers' bracket. Hagerstown 'B' won its first game by forfeit over First State Delaware and will play South Adams on Friday at 6 p.m.

Worthington started the game, allowing one hit in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked six. He was pulled after throwing 94 pitches. O'Neill pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, allowing no hits or walks while fanning two.

"We're a deep staff with at least seven starters," Hagerstown manager Steve Berger said. "Fourteen of our 15 players have done some pitching."


Hagerstown took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. After Tyler Marshall scored from third on Josh Green's two-out bunt single, O'Neill hit a two-run shot.

Hagerstown extended its lead to 6-0 in the fourth. Colby McCauley hit a sacrifice fly and Cole Sellers hit a two-out two-run single.

Worthington's two-run homer made it 8-0 in the fifth.

Chambersburg scored its lone run in the bottom half as Nathan Swope scored from second on an error.

Hagerstown completed the scoring with a three-run rally in the sixth, highlighted by Sean Colgan's two-run single.

O'Neill and Sellers each finished with two hits.

"I thought the boys played up to their potential," Berger said. "There were nerves early on, but once they got their legs underneath them, they were fine."
