Washington County schools are recognized by the state

July 18, 2006

Five schools in Washington County have been recognized by the Maryland Department of Education as Exemplar Schools as part of the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports program, according to a department press release.

Washington County schools receiving the award are Bester, Eastern and Fountaindale elementary schools, and E.R. Hicks and Northern middle schools, according to the release.

The 108 public and private schools throughout Maryland that received the recognition were honored last week at interventions and supports training, according to the release.

The Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports program is the department's approach to creating and maintaining a safe and effective learning environment in schools. Schools that follow the program see a decline in the number of office referrals and suspensions, according to the release.

To be named an Exemplar School, a school is nominated at the county level. Each nominated school then is visited by members of the Maryland PBIS team, according to the release.
