"Love What You Do and Do What You Love" was the theme for this year's Berkeley County Fire and Rescue Association Queen pageant, sponsored by Hedgesville Volunteer Fire Co.

Six young ladies competed for the title and were each escorted by a member of the fire department, with approximately 100 people attending the festivities at Tomahawk Intermediate School.

Whitney Henry, the 18-year-old daughter of Shawn and Susan Henry of Hedgesville, W.Va., was crowned queen. She was escorted by firefighter Brad Knieriem, representing Martinsburg Fire Department Co. 1. Whitney, a 2006 graduate of Hedgesville High School, plans to attend Shepherd University and veterinary school, and return to the area to open her own practice specializing in large farm animals. Whitney's platform topic was "Under Pressure." She was crowned by the 2005 queen, Samantha Hess, and her escort, Travis Coates, representing Back Creek Valley Fire Co.

Jennifer Davis, the 17-year-old daughter of Joe and Kathy Davis of Bunker Hill, W.Va., received the title of princess. A senior at Musselman High School, Jennifer was escorted by firefighter Josh Sencindiver, representing Back Creek Valley Fire Co. Jennifer's platform topic was "Underage Drinking and Driving." Her gifts were given to her by the 2005 princess, Rebecca Grove, with her escort Cody Hollingsworth, representing South Berkeley Fire Co.


The queen will make numerous appearances in the area, and will be the "goodwill ambassador" for the fire association.

Whitney will compete in the 2007 Apple Blossom Honorary Out-of-Town Fire and Rescue Chiefs Pageant in Winchester, Va.

In addition to her tiara, Whitney received scholarship money and a sash and trophy, as well as flowers from Flowers Unlimited; Premier Designs Jewelry, a gift from Rhonda Banks, consultant; a gift certificate from BeautiControl Cosmetics and Marilyn Blaylock, consultant; and a gift basket from Potomac Video.

Jennifer's gifts included scholarship money, sash, trophy, flowers from Flowers Unlimited, a gift basket from Potomac Video; and a gift certificate from BeautiControl Cosmetics.

Donna Custer was mistress of ceremonies. Special entertainment was provided by Kara Frye, who sang the national anthem during the flag ceremony. Firefighter Brad Knieriem carried the American flag and firefighter Jason Collis carried the West Virginia state flag. Kara sang "You Raise Me Up" to the escorts while the contestants presented them with a stuffed animal as a thank you for participating.

Judges were Becky Knox of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Golda Putnam and Roger Miller, both from Winchester. Auditor and treasurer was Marcia Blaylock.

Operating the sound equipment for the rehearsal and pageant were Aaron Kilmer and Jim Bishop.

Members of the Hedgesville Junior Firefighters served refreshments, under the leadership of Keena Crowell.

Contestants and their escorts were Nicole Sencindiver, escorted by Davey Pappas, representing Back Creek Valley Fire Co.; Jessica Robine, escorted by Dustin Phebus, junior firefighter, Hedgesville Volunteer Fire Co.; Jennifer Viands, escorted by firefighter Tristan Smith, representing Hedgesville Volunteer Fire Co.; and Krista Shepherd, escorted by firefighter Jason Collis, representing Hedgesville Volunteer Fire Co.

Winners in other categories were: Jennifer Davis, sportswear; Nicole Sencindiver, congeniality; Whitney Henry, photogenic; Krista Shepherd, private interview with the judges; Whitney Henry, on-stage interview; Jessica Robine, essay; and Whitney Henry, gown.

Pageant committee members were director Marilyn Blaylock, treasurer Marcia Blaylock, support team Jacki Truman, producer Shannon Markley and Jennifer Jones.
