Mail Call

July 15, 2006

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"This is for the person who called in about getting disability and working, too. Well, it's real simple. They're not 100 percent disabled. They can work so many hours a week. Since we're still working the government don't have to give us as much money. That's the answer."

"No longer is Boonsboro made up of medium-income people or low-income people. It is mostly rich people coming down from the big cities and taking over Boonsboro. That's why they can increase the taxes as much as they want. So it's the mayor and council who are to be blamed for this, not the citizens who have lived here all their lives and who are now suffering at the hands of the rich."

"Yes, I'm calling about Wagner in Arlington Cemetery. He had a choice on that night of Feb. 15. He didn't have to go to that door. When he went to that door, he was carrying his honorable discharge in one hand and a knife in the other hand. What he did to those two people, his honorable discharge went right out the door. He should have never been taken to the Arlington Cemetery, so taking him out is the right thing to do. He had a choice. He didn't have to go to that door that night and he didn't have to do what he did. "

"I just want to give you an example of (how) liberals (think). Right now they have a death row inmate on hold because they don't know if injecting him with a lethal injection is a humane way of killing him. So they're putting him on hold for murder because they want to see if this is a humane way of killing him. Now these are the same people who think it is all right to run a scissors in a baby's head in a partial birth abortion and using abortion as a form of birth control. These (individuals) are wondering if it's humane to kill a murderer with a lethal injection but they don't even think about that baby. Now are you going to tell me that you want these kind of people running our country? I don't think so."

"This is to the (caller) who is tired of hearing about how many deaths occur in Iraq. Shame on you! You should have that figure tattooed on your forehead so that you never forget it. Those soldiers are over there fighting for their country, for your country, and as far as I'm concerned we don't see that number often enough. Hang your head. You should never forget what misery those young people are going through over there."

"The abject level of misunderstanding exhibited by callers to this column is unbelievable. Recently, a caller couldn't understand why NASA doesn't launch the space shuttle from a 737 like they used to, or from a 757. Of course, those who read news that's more enlightening than the diatribes found in this column, and don't just look at pictures, know that the shuttle has never been launched from an airplane. That would be quite impossible. More than 100 shuttle launches have been made from the launch site at Cape Canaveral, Fla., as duly reported in the press. The only time a shuttle is attached to an airplane, a 747 by the way, is when it is being ferried back to the launch site after making an alternate landing in California."

"We just got a really cute little pit bull puppy. She's adorable, she loves everybody. My neighbor told me my home insurance wouldn't cover me if the dog bit someone. I checked, and she was right."

"This is for the lady who bought the little white shutters at the Fourth of July yard sale. I have found the pin that was missing. If you call 301-491-2156, I will be happy to see to it that you can have that."

"We desperately need year-round schools. Parents can't afford the care for their kids during the summer. I see the kids running all over. They have nothing to do. Only kids with money have something to do, maybe go to the mall. This is a problem that is America's secret shame. We have money for everything else - to send a man to the moon, but we can't take care of the children. This needs to stop."

"I can't believe that the Republicans voted down the minimum wage law. It looks like to me that they're not for the working class."

- Hagerstown

"The newspapers, the radio and TV keeps referring to the person who was raped by Marines in Iraq as a woman. People, this person was 14 years old. She is a child, not a woman. She would be in one of our middle schools. She and her family were then murdered and burned. If this happened here in Washington County, we would be outraged. Since it happened in a foreign country to an Islamic person, we just don't seem to care that much. If we are all God's children, don't you think it's time we started acting like it?"
