Md. man arraigned in Franklin Co. rapes

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A former Hagerstown man serving a long prison sentence in Maryland for sexual assault was arraigned Thursday in Chambersburg on charges that he raped two women in Franklin County in 2004.

Pov Srun, 35, formerly of 838 W. Washington St., is charged by police in Waynesboro, Pa., and Chambersburg with two counts each of rape, kidnapping, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault, simple assault, terroristic threats, robbery of a motor vehicle, theft and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, according to the criminal complaints.

Srun was arraigned before District Magistrate Gary Carter Thursday and jailed in Franklin County Prison on $500,000 bond in each case, Chambersburg Police Department Detective Scott Mummert said.

That Srun is serving a prison sentence in Maryland makes the issue of him making bail "moot," Mummert said.

Srun is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on the charges before Carter at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, July 20, Mummert said.

Srun is charged with the Sept. 16, 2004, assault of a 16-year-old girl that began at about 9:20 p.m. in the parking lot of Kmart on East Main Street. As the girl was getting into a vehicle, a man forced his way in, pushed her into the passenger's seat and drove off. After sexually assaulting her for about 45 minutes, the man drove the car back to the area of the shopping center and left on foot.

The affidavit of probable cause stated the man "concealed his identity with multiple pieces of duct tape across his face."

On the afternoon of Sept. 28, 2004, a 20-year-old woman was abducted in her vehicle from the parking lot of Weis Market on Wayne Avenue in Chambersburg, police said. The man drove a short distance before parking the vehicle and sexually assaulting her.

The man, who wore a ski mask, later drove the woman's vehicle back to Weis Market and left, telling her to keep her head down.

Srun was indicted in Montgomery County, Md., for a Jan. 25 sexual assault in Rockville, Md., and another Feb. 21 in Bethesda, Md., according to the State's Attorney's Office in that county. Srun was arrested Feb. 21 in Hagerstown after a witness in Bethesda gave police a description of a Honda Odyssey used by the attacker.

Montgomery County police provided police in Chambersburg with a sample of Srun's DNA on March 3, police said. On March 24, the Pennsylvania State Police Lab reported that Srun's DNA matched samples taken in the two Franklin County rapes.
