Harpers Ferry Road's Antietam bridge closed at intervals

July 13, 2006

The stone arch bridge over the Antietam Creek on Harpers Ferry Road at Limekiln Road is closed for part of the day over each of the next several days while removal of storm debris takes place, according to a Washington County Department of Highways press release.

The bridge will be closed 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Signs have been posted to mark the closure and detours in the area.

The removal effort involves the use of a crane that must be positioned on the bridge, according to the press release.

The Harpers Ferry bridge is the last in the line of historic structures spanning the creek from the Pennsylvania line to the Potomac River. Clean-up work will continue at bridges along the creek for the next several weeks.

The culvert over the creek on Toms Road near its intersection with Benevola Church Road northwest of Boonsboro will be closed until Sept. 1 due to reconstruction of the creek crossing. Appropriate detours will be posted and maintained. That closing is unrelated to flooding.
