The Washington County Sheriff's Department's chief deputy, Capt. Doug Mullendore, is running for sheriff in the 2006 election.

Mullendore, 52, of 15613 Natural Well Road in Williamsport, is a Democrat.

A 28-year law enforcement veteran, Mullendore was born and raised in Washington County. He graduated from Boonsboro High School and spent his first four years in law enforcement as a Boonsboro Police Department officer. He spent the next 24 years at the Sheriff's Department.

"I am always available to answer the questions and concerns raised by the citizens," he said.

He said his first objective will be to continue working with Washington County Public Schools to ensure children's safety. Mullendore, the first director of the Washington County Narcotics Task Force, said he wants to continue to combat illicit drugs.

One of eight members on the Radio Communications Upgrade Project steering committee, Mullendore said he wants to improve communication between emergency responders throughout the county.
