Having a coffin fit

Faith Potts, from left, Larry Dahlke, Liza Vann, Carl Randolph and Vaughn Irving star in the Wayside Theatre production of "Lying in State." A state senator has died in a ridiculous gun accident which has made him into a national hero. Local political leaders are looking for someone to fill his seat. The senator's ex-wife is looking for a bugler to play for his funeral. A host of other oddball characters are looking for love, votes, the right casket and a big purple squirrel named Mel in this madcap comedy about love and politics where everything is not what it seems to be. Showtimes are 2:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays; and 8 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through Aug. 5, at Wayside Theatre, Main Street, U.S. 11, Middletown, Va. Tickets cost $10 to $27. Call 1-540-869-1776 or go to www.waysidetheatre.org.

Fine line between saved and solvent

Vickie Taylor (from left), Katrina Yaukey and Ray Ficca appear in the Totem Pole Playhouse production of "Incorruptible," by Michael Hollinger. In Priseaux, France, about A.D. 1250, the brothers of a local monastery confront a great challenge: Saint Foy, their patron saint, hasn't worked a miracle in 13 years, and the subsequent drop in pilgrims has brought a drop in donations to support the monastery. A spiritual (and financial) crisis seems inevitable ... and then a one-eyed minstrel arrives for a visit. Suddenly, miracles abound. The show continues through Sunday, July 16, at Totem Pole Playhouse, 9555 Golf Course Road in Caledonia State Park. For show times and tickets, call 717-352-2164 or 888-805-7056 or go to www.totempoleplayhouse.org.
