A man living in Washington County stole more than $1,000 in checks while the checkbook's owner, who was his roommate, was in jail, a Washington County District Court charging document alleges.

Gary Wayne O'Dell, 44, whose last known address was in Everett, Pa., allegedly cashed or made payable to other individuals nine checks totaling $1,430 while his roommate was in the Washington County Detention Center, according to the document.

The document states the victim told police someone had forged his name to each check. The checks were cashed in and around Hagerstown, according to the document.

O'Dell was charged with four counts each of forgery of private documents and theft of less than $500, and three counts of uttering false documents.
