"What puzzles me is how a politician can be a born-again Christian. Politics in itself is dirty business. A rabbit can be a rabbit and a squirrel can be a squirrel, but they cannot be both." - Maugansville

"I work from 4 in the afternoon to 4 in the morning. I come home, go to bed, I go to sleep, get up, take a shower and get ready for work. I have about an hour to watch TV. In that hour, I like to watch 'Days of Our Lives,' which I have watched since it began. In the last couple of days I haven't been able to watch it because of Wimbledon. Would somebody please tell me why they have to put these shows in the afternoon, when two-thirds of the country is working and two-thirds of the country is not paying the least bit of attention to it? Then they have it again at night on ESPN." - Falling Waters, W.Va.

"About a year or so ago, they started planting trees up there on West Washington Street. When the guy was putting them in, I asked him who's gonna take care of the weeds and the grass when they grow up, and he said the city is. I'd like somebody from the city to come up here and take a look at this place and just see all the weeds and grass that's growing up where the trees are." - Hagerstown

"I'm calling in to say a big 'thank you' to Big Al of the Circuit Court courthouse building. He's very professional and very pleasant, and a good way to start my day." - Hagerstown

"I'm calling in regard to the Sharpsburg caller who stated in The Daily Mail on Friday, July 7, 'I think it's time that America starts taking care of America's problems. Let the rest of the world take care of their problems.' The rest of the world, I'd like to tell this caller, has problems that only America can take care of. I don't know if this caller has traveled outside the U.S., but there's some reason why people in nearly every country want to come to America, especially those of the Third World." - Rohrersville

"I'm calling in regards to aggressive driving. Try being a delivery driver of any sort. I deliver pizza for a living. Try getting behind every slow car on the road and having every tailgater behind catch every light, and umpteen stop signs and yield signs on the way, and not be aggressive. When you deliver pizza for six to eight hours a day and you've got all this to deal with, then you can complain and become aggravated like me." - Hagerstown

"I'm calling about why the (newspaper) wants to expose the girl who was put on probation and given house arrest (for) theft, such as saying the girl's mother called the police. It seems to me that our news people must be more careful about exposing those who try to help, because they become victims of retaliatory behavior by these young people." - Rohrersville

"I just got home from one of my favorite restaurants, and I wanted to tell you what happened there. I asked my waitress for a refill on my drink. She took my empty glass back, and took my used glass and stuck in down in the ice bin and dipped out ice for me and refilled my drink and brought it back to me. I couldn't believe it." - Sharpsburg

"I would like to commend Ecile Shaw for the letter in the editor's column. She needs to be commended for telling the truth. I agree with her wholeheartedly. Thank you, Ecile, for bringing the truth to the surface." - Boonsboro

"I'm calling in to find out the name and phone number of the lady that is writing the second volume of 'Working Women: First in their Field in Washington County.' I need to talk to her because I'm interested in checking to see if I can get in the second book." - Hagerstown

"I'm just so sick of hearing people saying how many people have died in the Iraq war. How many babies are murdered every year in the U.S. through abortion? But yet no one has a problem with this. Quit griping and complaining - I'm sick of hearing it." - Hagerstown

"I'm retired Army, 23 years in the military. Everyone bashes Bush, but stop and think: Kennedy, the Bay of Pigs, LBJ, the Vietnam War. Carter - Mr. Giveaway. Clinton - they tried to bomb the World Trade Centers from the parking (garage). He didn't do anything about it. He arrested a blind man. So why does everyone knock Bush? At least he's doing something about it." - Hagerstown

"It is Saturday morning, approximately 8:45. A Marylander in a truck just ran the stop sign at the shopping center of Wesel Boulevard, by Sam's Club and Martin's. I was coming in. He practically hit me. I blew the horn. The man turned his car around in the middle of the road, chased me down, and then verbally assaulted me. Sir, I got your license tag number, and I've turned it in to the police. You will be receiving a phone call. We hear talk so much about aggressive driving." - Halfway
