Ending sours 8-inning contest between Maugansville, Sharpsburg

July 11, 2006|by ZACH PETERS / Staff Correspondent

MAUGANSVILLE - A great game that lasted eight innings and about 2 1/2 hours ended on a sour note for Sharpsburg Little League, as host Maugansville won 3-2 on a botched throw from the catcher to the pitcher in a District 1 11-12 All-Star Tournament losers' bracket contest.

After a walk to Maugansville's Will Resh loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the eighth, Sharpsburg catcher Jared Blickenstaff - who hit the game's only home run - threw low back to pitcher Marshall McMillion, and the ball got past McMillion and skipped into center field, allowing Brent Mentzer to score from third with the winning run.

After Maugansville tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth on a single by Kyle Shanholtz that scored Colby Waugh from third, both teams had two good chances to take the lead.

In the top of the sixth, Sharpsburg had Steven Duck on second but was unable to drive him in. In the bottom half, Maugansville had runners on second and third with two outs, but Rodney Flora recorded his 10th and final strikeout to end the rally.

In the top of the seventh, Sharpsburg's Dustin Gregory hit a rope off the fence in left-center, but was only able to get a single out of it and Sharpsburg couldn't rally. In the bottom half, Maugansville had the bases loaded with two outs, but McMillion struck out Waugh to end the threat.

Both starters threw hard, were dominant, went six innings and piled up strikeouts. Flora gave up five hits and struck out 10. Jake Bachtell gave up five hits and struck out 12.
