Caron leads local contingent

BEALLSVILLE, Md. - Steve Caron, of Waynesboro, Pa., and Black Rock Golf Course, led an area contingent in the opening round of the Maryland Open Championship at the Members Club at Four Streams on Monday.

Caron ended with a 2-over-par 73 and in a tie for 21st place. His round left him four shots behind the leaders, but it could have been better if not for a double-bogey seven on the par-5 finishing hole.

Beaver Creek professional Dirk Schultz was in a tie for 32nd place with a 75. Caron and Schultz were the only two to make the cut after the first day.

Greg Henry, of Beaver Creek, posted a 79 and Brandon Sheaffer, of Black Rock, had an 89. Beaver Creek's Ken Lampard and Tim Steiner both withdrew.

Hole-in-one recorded

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Henry Woodring, of Waynesboro, Pa., recorded a hole-in-one at Whitetail Golf Club. He aced No. 6, a 128-yard par-3, with a 6-iron. He was playing with Dave Singer and Jake Gayman.
