Mail Call

July 07, 2006

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"How ironic - one day I get my $150 refund check from the county on my property taxes, and the next day I get my tax notice for this next year, and it's $150 higher than last year's. Yes, thank you for the refund and the tax increase."

- Hagerstown

"We need to ban pit bulls from the city. People don't know how to use leashes, they don't know how to train their dogs. They have to be banned. Insurance companies don't cover pit bulls anyway. If pit bulls tear up somebody else's dog, insurance isn't going to cover it. It's just a problem waiting to happen. Get rid of them now."

"To the Hagerstown caller that they are a shopaholic and they can't help themselves, there is help for shopaholics, just like there is for any kind of addictive problem. Number one, you can go to counseling, and number two, leave your credit card home, or better yet, cut it up. Start right there - just cut the credit card up. You can help yourself. If you max that credit card out and can't pay for it, you're gonna do without one anyway, so you may as well start right now. What did people do before they had credit cards? They saved up and waited until they could buy an item."

"Here we got our tax refund on Thursday last week, now we got our tax bill on Saturday, but guess what? They didn't put in whether we owe the flush tax. I called the county government today, and they forgot to tell everybody the flush tax is gonna be billed separate. Last year they said it was gonna be billed with our tax bill."

- Leitersburg

"Anybody who walks in to obtain a driver's license can't just get one, as one caller suggested if you show money. That wasn't the case at all for me. "

- Waynesboro, Pa.

"It is truly amazing that the state of New Jersey is experiencing a $4.5 million deficit, when at the same time the governor of the state of Maryland is crying for slot machines. New Jersey has had them for years."

"Regarding Mr. Wagner's body being removed from Arlington, as terrible, as much as a monstrous thing he did, he was honorably discharged. He did serve honorably for his country. What he did afterwards, while it was terrible, I feel his body should be left there. It's a hard thing to say - I retired from military service after 30 years and as a combat veteran, and I find it very difficult to accept him being there, but he served his country, he served it honorably, and that's the requirement for him to be buried there - as horrible as what he did (was)."

- Maugansville

"Concerning the Dixie Chicks, people keep saying all they did was protest and talk about the president, and make their voices known. It's amazing that somebody attacking the president or America, what they say is allowed to be said and you're not allowed to say anything about it, but anybody criticizes them, you're terrible. They can criticize the president and the country, and I can criticize them. That's my right, and you're trying to take it away from me."

- Maugansville

"I'd like to clarify, I'm the person who called in saying Boonsboro does not need a dollar store. My point is that Boonsboro is starting to come around and be a nice little town now. You can go in almost direction, a 5-minute drive, and get to a dollar store. I just think we've got a beautiful new shopping center and so many things would benefit this town other than another dollar store in the area. That was the point I was trying to make. There are so much other better things that would help the residents of Boonsboro other than a dollar store."

"Thank you to One Mountain Foundation, PenMar Development Corporation, Corporate Office Properties Trust, and the Department of the Army, and everyone else involved for the great fireworks display at Fort Ritchie Saturday night. It was a terrific show, and an event worthy to build on for next year. 'Job well done' to all involved."

- Waynesboro, Pa.

"A great big thank you to the committee who worked for the Independence Day celebration in Clear Spring. It was wonderful. I hope we can continue it year after year. The fireworks were unbelievable."

- Clear Spring

"I just wanted to give a thumbs up to everyone who helped get the Mountaintop Heritage Days together. It was a really nice weekend, and the fireworks at Fort Ritchie were just beautiful. Congratulations to everyone that pulled off a great weekend."

- Highfield

"I'm calling in regards to the roads around here. When somebody does construction on a road, then they should have to patch that up just as smooth as it was before that. It's ridiculous that we have to drive our cars on roads like this, because they either don't resurface them or they don't fix the patch like it should be fixed after they tear it up. I just think that there should be a law that they have to fix it up. We pay too much money for our cars to be driving over roads like this."
