FUNKSTOWN - Matt Ridenour had three hits, including a home run, and five RBI to lead Funkstown to a win in its second-half opener against Frederick.

Matt Murray added two hits, including a solo homer, while Tyler Beard had two hits and three RBI and Jere Mills drove in two for Funkstown (13-14, 2-7). Cam Shifler allowed two hits and struck out six for the win.

BRIEFS



Mets tryouts at Municipal Stadium



The New York Mets will be holding open tryouts at Municipal Stadium on July 20. Players will be able to perform in front of a Mets scout for a chance to be selected to sign a professional baseball contract.

Players should be at the ballpark no later than 9 a.m. to register, with the workout beginning at approximately 10 a.m. Players should come dressed and ready to play and will need to enter the ballpark at the stadium's main gates. Participants should also bring their own baseball gear and equipment.

The tryout session is free for players and open to the public.

Diamonds in the Rough



The Diamonds in the Rough baseball camp for children ages 7-17 will be held July 17-20 at the Halfway Little League complex at Marty Snook Park.

Several of the area's best high school coaches past and present, including Jefferson head coach John Lowery and North Hagerstown assistant and former Boonsboro head coach Fred Kreiger and former Hubs head coach Dave Warrenfeltz, will join former Frostburg State University head coach Phil Caruso in teaching the fundamentals of the game.

Cost is $125 per camper for the four days, with July 21 reserved as a makeup date should any of the four days be rained out. Cost is $225 for two campers from the same family.

Shippensburg 5K



The Shippensburg Community Fair 5K Run/Walk will be held July 29 at the Shippensburg Community Fairgrounds.

The race will begin at 8:30 a.m., with race-day registration beginning at 7:30. Race-day registration is $8, not including a shirt. Registration before July 29 is $7, not including a shirt. Registration with shirt, received before July 22, is $10. Awards will be given to overall winners, Masters winners, age-group winners up through 70-and-over, and top walkers.

Summit Point Hyperfest



Summit Point Raceway in Summit Point, W.Va., will host the 2006 Hyperfest, sponsored by Paul Reed Smith guitars, on Saturday. Racing gets under way at 8 a.m., and features NASA road races and U.S Drift National competition. Plenty of show cars will also be on display.

General admission is $20. Spectators can also sign up to take their cars onto the track, or ride with a professional driver. The event features live music and a raffle for a PRS guitar.
