John M. Baer, 97

John Metz Baer, 97, of Hagerstown, died Thursday, June 29, 2006, at Homewood, Williamsport, Md.

Born June 30, 1908, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Adam Daniel and Leah Bertie (Metz) Baer.

He was married for 29 years to Joan Cushwa Baer of Hagerstown, Md.

John graduated from Goshen College in 1932.

He served as president and owner of the Professional Arts Assoc. Inc., Hagerstown; Greencastle Ice and Cold Storage Inc., Greencastle, Pa.; Baer Packing Corp., Greencastle; Baer Brothers Inc. and Baer Foods Inc., both of Hagerstown; Frederick Produce Company, Frederick; and Baer Foods Company, LaVale, Md.

He was an official representative of the National Frozen Foods Assoc. to the First International Foods Conference, Paris, 1950. He served as chairman of the United Way of Washington County and the Hagerstown Parking Authority. He was a member of the Hagerstown Junior College Advisory Council 1953-71 (vice president 1958-60, president 1960-66); he was past president of the Washington County Hospital Board of Directors of Hagerstown, 1958-60; past president of the Washington County Board of Education, 1962-68; the Hagerstown Junior College Board of Education (vice president 1953-54, president 1954-58); and the National Produce Marketing Assoc. (past president).


He served on the board of directors of the American Heart Association of Maryland and the Maryland Symphony Orchestra. He was an honorary member of the Greater Hagerstown Club. He received the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Mason-Dixon Council of the Boy Scouts of America in 1999. He was a member of the Hagerstown Chamber of Commerce (president); the Assembly Club of Hagerstown; the Fountain Head Country Club and the Hagerstown Rotary Club, where he received a Paul Harris Fellow Award.

He was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church.

In addition to his community activities, he was also a developer and owner of the Rolling Hills section of Fountain Head, where he was a longtime resident.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, John Metz Baer Jr. of Wenonah, N.J.; one daughter, Deborah Ann Parlato of Hagerstown; one stepdaughter, Catherine Cushwa Schoen of Hagerstown; two stepsons, Stephen F. Schoen Jr. of Hagerstown and Peter M. Schoen of Smithsburg, Md.; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one stepson, Christopher C. Schoen; four brothers, Martin Baer, Adam Baer, Jacob Baer and Amos Baer; and three sisters, Anna Grace Baer, Hannah Rumsby and Bertie Shenk.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 6, 2006, at John Wesley United Methodist Church, 129 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Robert Moles shall officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2006, at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown.

Herbert E. Baker Jr., 62

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Herbert Eugene "Herbie" Baker Jr., 62, of 8736 Windy Hill Road, died Saturday, July 1, 2006, at his home.

Born May 27, 1944, in South Mountain, Pa., he was the son of the late Herbert L. and Mary Sprow Butler Baker.

He was employed at National Book Network in Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda K. Welsh Baker, whom he married April 14, 1971; one daughter, Eugena L. Kauffman of Waynesboro; one son, Herbert E. Baker III of Mont Alto, Pa.; four sisters, Betty Strang of Fayetteville, Pa., Delores Waidlich of Mercersburg, Pa., Victoria Butler of Philadelphia and Rose Sload of Chambersburg, Pa.; six grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brothers and sisters.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro. The Revs. John W. Shubert and Lester Kauffman will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery near Mont Alto.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Mildred L. Albritton, 79

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Mildred Lois "Millie" Albritton, 79, of Dale Earnhardt Drive, died Friday, June 30, 2006, at Heartland Nursing Home in Martinsburg.

Born May 23, 1927, in Tampa, Fla., she was the daughter of the late John Wesley and Geneva Ida Tanner Tucker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Albritton, in 1980.

She was employed as a dietary assistant for City Hospital until retiring in 1992.

She was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church of Marlowe, W.Va., where she served on the administrative board for many years.
