Williamsport seniors attend Rotary leadership camp

Eight Williamsport High School students who will be seniors when the 2006-07 school year begins joined 42 other high school juniors and seniors from Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia at a leadership camp sponsored by Rotary clubs of District 7350.

Various Rotary clubs, including the Williamsport Rotary Club, provided scholarships for the camp June 11 to 14 at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa.

The Williamsport Rotary Club sponsored Amanda Berry, Garrett Hamby, Levi Lankford, Amy Matonak, Cade McCarty, Dan Myers, Sara Swartz and Kayla Willis.

Known as Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), the program provides education and training for young people with leadership potential.

Students participated in such activities as a GPS and compass orienteering course; team-building programs at Penn State's Shavers Creek; community service projects at the Huntingdon United Way and Westminster Woods, a continuing care retirement community; and meetings at local Rotary clubs.

RYLA participants receive training from successful professionals, with special emphasis on the importance of ethics and community service.

The Williamsport club is part of Rotary International's global network of more than 31,000 clubs in 166 countries. Rotary International consists of 1.2 million professionals who volunteer to improve the quality of life in their home and world communities.
