July 01, 2006|by MATTHEW UMSTEAD

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Beginning today, the Community and Technical College of Shepherd in Martinsburg officially will be called Blue Ridge Community and Technical College, officials announced.

Workers on Friday mounted new signs on the outside of the school's only campus building off West Stephen and South Raleigh streets in advance of the name change approved by the West Virginia Legislature earlier this year.

"Receiving independent accreditation signifies tremendous growth and presents so many opportunities for our college," college President Peter Checkovich said in a news release. "We are highly optimistic about the future of the Blue Ridge Community and Technical College and the impact we will have on students and the local work force."

Blue Ridge Community and Technical College is an independent educational institution, accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association.

At 400 W. Stephen St. in downtown Martinsburg, the college offers more than 40 associate degree and certification courses, including business, criminal justice, information technology and nursing.

"One of our goals is to make our area more marketable by offering a highly skilled, well-educated work force," said Ann Shipway, dean of the Economic and Workforce Development Division.
