The Hancock Interleague baseball team finished with an impressive 17-0 record this season and will now embark on tournament play, competing in the Maryland District 1 Junior Tournament today at Valley.
"We had a good year," manager Harry Lanehart said before a practice session earlier this week. "There were six teams in the league during the regular season - Cavetown Planing and the Elks from Smithsburg, Boonsboro Pharmacy, K&M Groceries from Boonsboro, Clear Spring and ourselves.
"The teams are comprised of 13- and 14-year-old players," Lanehart said. "We will represent Hancock in tournament play. The individual teams from Boonsboro and Smithsburg will form all-star units."
The undefeated Hancock squad featured a balanced attack. Derek Younker, Justin Berkstresser and Lucas Trunkle served as the three captains.
Younker, a pitcher and shortstop, sported a 4-0 record while on the mound and did not allow an earned run all season. In 22 innings of work, he struck out 42 and allowed just three walks.
