The Hancock Interleague baseball team finished with an impressive 17-0 record this season and will now embark on tournament play, competing in the Maryland District 1 Junior Tournament today at Valley.

"We had a good year," manager Harry Lanehart said before a practice session earlier this week. "There were six teams in the league during the regular season - Cavetown Planing and the Elks from Smithsburg, Boonsboro Pharmacy, K&M Groceries from Boonsboro, Clear Spring and ourselves.

"The teams are comprised of 13- and 14-year-old players," Lanehart said. "We will represent Hancock in tournament play. The individual teams from Boonsboro and Smithsburg will form all-star units."

The undefeated Hancock squad featured a balanced attack. Derek Younker, Justin Berkstresser and Lucas Trunkle served as the three captains.

Younker, a pitcher and shortstop, sported a 4-0 record while on the mound and did not allow an earned run all season. In 22 innings of work, he struck out 42 and allowed just three walks.

Berkstresser, a pitcher and third baseman, carried a 3-0 reord on the mound while Trunkle, a pitcher and outfielder, had a 3-0 record on the mound.

Berkstresser also had a team-best .667 batting average, followed by Trunkle, .595; Younker, .568; and Dylan Whiteside, .561.

Other team members include: Adam Younker, Ethan Martin, Nick Lanehart, David Weller, Stephen Starliper, Nick Harvey, Chris Harden, Jason Price and Ryan Poole.

Grady Starliper, Kris Kirk and Don Berkestresser assist in the coaching duties.

"Our regular season usually runs from April through June," Lanehart said. "It was a great year for the team and we hope to continue that type of play in the upcoming tournament."
