Antietam's Salute to Independence

June 28, 2006

According to Superintendent John Howard, Antietam National Battlefield's annual Salute to Independence Celebration still is planned for Saturday.

Entering its 21st year, the event that typically draws 30,000 to 40,000 people has never been rained out, Howard said Tuesday afternoon.

"There's never been a cancellation in the history of the event, so we're due for one. But, hopefully, it won't be this year," Howard said.

According to the National Weather Service on Tuesday night, Antietam Creek at Sharpsburg was expected to crest at 2 p.m. today at 8.4 feet. At that level, the creek would cover the one-lane bridge on Burnside Bridge Road and flood parts of the park near the bridge, the weather service's Web site indicates.

A decision on whether the celebration is canceled will not be made until Saturday, Howard said.

To find out whether the event will proceed as planned, Howard said people may call the visitors' center after 11 a.m. Saturday. The phone number is 301-432-5124.
