Fire destroys barn

June 27, 2006|by KAREN HANNA

About 80 firefighters from departments in Funkstown, Boonsboro, Williamsport and Halfway responded to a barn fire at 18218 Rench Road south of Hagerstown late Monday, Funkstown Volunteer Fire Co. Chief Paul Hottinger said.

With the owner's permission, Hottinger said firefighters intended to let the fire consume the barn.

"We're just going to let it burn. I'm sure we'll probably be out here again (Tuesday). I'm sure it will rekindle, but thank the Lord for giving us rain," Hottinger said.

The barn was full of hay and farm equipment, he said. No one was hurt in the blaze.

Hottinger said at about 10:20 p.m. that he planned to begin releasing firefighters from the scene, to where they were called about 9:20 p.m.

A man Hottinger identified as the owner of the barn sat stonefaced as water drenched the faces of firefighters watching the blaze. Hottinger said the barn was part of the Artz farm.

The cause of the fire was not determined Monday night, Hottinger said.
