Twenty-five Washington County residents have been named to the Dean's List at Shepherd University, Shepherdstown, W.Va.

Hagerstown residents include Johanna Anderson, Katie Cantler, Katie Franklin, Joshua Miller, Cassandra Newton, Sabrina Schiano di Cola, Ashley Shingler, Danial Sims, Tracey Thomas and Jason Woods.

Boonsboro residents include Shannon Bittner, Chasen Deener, Brooke Howell and Kelsi Koerting.

Other Washington County residents include Andrea Changuris, Brownsville; Erika Osborne, Hancock; Tesa Unger, Hancock; Aaron Holder and Judy Spence, Keedysville,; Daniel Gray, Knoxville; John Herron, Sharon Moats-Salamone and Kimberly Marshall, Sharpsburg; David Miller, Smithsburg; and Joan Conklin, Williamsport.

To be eligible for the Dean's List, a student must maintain a 3.4 grade-point average for the semester and carry at least 15 hours of course work or be in a professional teaching block.


Brittany Harrington of Myersville, Md. made the Dean's List for the spring 2006 semester at Mitchell College, New London, Conn.

Justin Daniel Simpson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Lee Simpson of Hagerstown, was named to the Dean's List at Pensacola Christian College, Pensacola, Fla., for the 2006 spring semester.

Simpson, a 2005 graduate of Heritage Academy, is a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering.

The following local students were named to the Dean's List for the 2006 spring semester at McDaniel College, Westminster, Md.:

Chase D. Wolf of Middletown, High Honors.

Katy Suzanne Powell of Smithsburg, High Honors.

Kathleen M. Woodward of Smithsburg, Honors.

Matthew A. Rouse of Williamsport, Honors.

Highest Honors are earned for a semester grade-point average of 3.90 or higher, High Honors for a grade-point average of 3.70 to 3.89, and Honors for a 3.50 to 3.69 grade-point average.

The Alsatia Club Inc. of Hagerstown recently awarded its annual Robert L. Worthington Memorial Scholarship to Sara Catherine Metz.

Sara, the daughter of Craig and Nina Metz, graduated from North Hagerstown High School in 2006. She plans to pursue studies in political science and sociology at St. Mary's College of Maryland.

This scholarship was established by Mrs. Hilda Worthington in memory of her late husband, Robert L. Worthington, a longtime member of the Alsatia Club.

Tara E. Brown of Big Pool, Md. was inducted into the St. Mary's College of Maryland Rho Gamma Chapter of the Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society in March. This honor society encourages scholarly attainment in this field of learning by reserving its regular membership for those who achieve superior academic records and who indicate special aptitude for the life sciences.

Brown, a junior at St. Mary's, is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, with a concentration in pre-medicine and a minor in history. She also served as her college's Student Government Association secretary this past year and will serve as Student Government president during the upcoming year.

She is a 2004 graduate of Clear Spring High School, where she was valedictorian of her class. She is the daughter of Michael and Sheila Brown of Big Pool.

Rebecca Deike, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eric Deike of Hagerstown, has been named to the Dean's List of Liberty University, Lynchburg, Va., for the 2006 spring semester, with a GPA of 3.94. She was also named to the Dean's List for the 2005 fall semester.

Deike was also selected to be a Resident Assistant upon her return to Liberty University in the fall. As a junior, Rebecca is pursuing an elementary education degree with an emphasis on mathematics.

Drs. Ralph Savagno and Roberta Rothen presented the Dr. Tom Altizer Memorial Scholarship award to two well-deserving local high school seniors during a reception at the office on May 19.

Hannah Smith of Clear Spring High School and Laura Forsythe of Williamsport High School were the recipients. Hannah will attend Virginia Tech, and plans to major in dairy science/pre-veterinary medicine. Laura will attend Messiah College, majoring in nursing. They were each awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

Rebecca Surgeon of Hagers town graduated magna cum laude from Elizabethtown College, Elizabethtown, Pa., on May 20, with a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry and Chemistry Honors.

Surgeon was also a member of the Elizabethtown College Honors Program, sponsored by The Hershey Company.

Naseema Noor, daughter of Ezat and Ghafrana Noor of Frederick Md., a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colgate University, Hamilton, N.Y., on May 21.

Noor, the Paul O. Stillman '55 Award at the university's annual awards convocation on May 2.

Lauren Patricia Meiners of Jefferson, Md. was named to the spring semester Dean's List at Radford University, Radford, Va.
