Poll comments - What Do You Think?

June 25, 2006

Editor's note: Each week, The Herald-Mail invites readers to answer poll questions on its Web site, www.herald-mail.com. Readers also may submit comments about the poll question when voting. Each Sunday, a sampling of edited reader comments will appear in The Herald-Mail.

Last week's poll question was: Should more of the projects for public facilities, such as football stadiums, be funded jointly by public and private efforts?

"If the public shares in the revenue generated by the stadium or arena, in addition to the taxes paid, then it would be fair. The revenue sharing should be pro rata."

"It seems from most comments I read on this and other issues, if I don't personally like the reason (music, sports, ice rink, etc.), then I don't favor it. I think if it is good for the community, then go for it!!! I may not ice (skating), but if others enjoy it ... why not have it. As for the new baseball stadium, I think we should have a new ballpark ... Municipal Stadium is so outdated, it is an eyesore to the community. Just look at Frederick, Aberdeen, Salisbury and Bowie ... they all have wonderful new parks ... Why do we always have to be last in line when it comes to something positive ... such as a new stadium."

"I think if a school is getting it and it uses taxpayers money, then the school or place should have to pay it back, but if it's public, then the public should pay for it."

"I don't believe in using taxpayer money for any form of entertainment, whether it is something I enjoy or not. If each of us could keep the tax money which is spent on stadiums, etc. and spend it directly on our favorite form of entertainment, it would be more equitable and we would have more diverse entertainment choices."

"Once again, you ask the wrong question. Some public facilities are necessary, football STADIUMS are not necessary. Athletic FIELDS are necessary. There are many higher priority projects that this county's government should spend our limited public funds on. But football STADIUMS might get the commissioners re-elected. At least their campaigns will be well funded by the STADIUM supporters. A small part of the county will be prepared for football games. The entire county will be unprepared for emergencies. Foolish Commissioners and BOE members!"

"Athletic fields are necessary, but how about making their properties available as parks when the fields aren't being used. For example, the softball complex on Kemps Mill Road is closed when it's not in use, and yet would make a great park for a place to have a picnic or go for a walk. If the public has to pay for places like this, then the public should be able to USE it at will also. It seems to me that there are stadiums already at several of the high schools (South High comes to mind right off the bat) that could be used when the school isn't using it for games. Practice on fields, play in stadiums, generate revenue on existing structures instead of building new ones."

"I think both public and private funds should be used. I think anything that gives our kids a place to go, whether it be for a football game or soccer game, is a good idea. Look at the statistics - kids who are involved in sports at the high school level go farther in life. I'd put my tax dollars and personal money into something for the youth in our community any day. They are our future. Let's support them both privately and publicly and help keep them out of trouble. I'd rather see my tax dollars go to something like a park or stadium than to a raise for the commissioners or BOE staff. But I also think if public funds are used, the public should be allowed to use the park/stadium during the off season. I know both North and South will allow people to use their track and tennis courts at will."
