Schultz gets even at PGA Pro Championship

June 23, 2006

VERONA, N.Y. - Beaver Creek Golf Club professional Dirk Schultz opened the 39th PGA Professional National Championship with an even-par 72 on Thursday.

Schultz's inability to master all four of the par 5s at Shenendoah Golf Club hampered his effort. Starting on the back nine, Schultz began his round with a birdie on No. 10, a par-5, and was 2-under following a birdie at No. 14.

However, he had a bogey on the par-3 17th and followed with a bogey on the par-5 18th for a 36. He later posted a bogey on the par-5 fifth hole and finished his round with a birdie on the par-3 ninth to reach level par.

Schultz stands in a tie for 58th place entering today's round at Atunyote Golf Club, a 7,294-yard test. Following today's round, the field of 312 golfers will be cut to the top 70 and ties.

Four players opened with 5-under 67s for the first-round lead.
