Shepherdstown Street Fest returns

June 22, 2006|by JULIE E. GREENE

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherdstown is known for being a good source of live music and cultural fare.

This Saturday the music, food and artistic wares will hit the streets for the second annual Shepherdstown Street Fest.

A full lineup of live music by local bands is scheduled, including bluegrass, rock 'n' roll, Latin rock and jazz. The stage will be on King Street between German and High streets.

This year's event will be bigger with more vendors and bands, says Donn Marshall, event manager.

About 60 food, art and crafts vendors are expected to be selling their wares, including paintings and handmade jewelry, Marshall says.

For children there will be hands-on art projects such as Jackson Pollock-style drip painting and face painting as well as a magic show, Marshall says.

There will be limited seating at the magic show in the War Memorial Building. Tickets for the free show are available at Shepherds-town Library, says Lisa Younis, event secretary.

For adults, there will be a beer truck at one end of the festival area. Bring ID.

People can stop by the War Memorial Building at 4:30 p.m. to see Happyslap, young actors from the Contemporary American Theater Festival, rehearsing, Younis says.

The street festival began last year as a celebration of the community's love for the arts, Marshall says.

The event dovetailed with the theater festival and Goose Route Dance Festival last year but will he held a little earlier this year in hopes of cooler weather and bigger crowds, Marshall says.
