Anna M. Croghan, 85


JAN. 13, 1921-JUNE 19, 2006

FREDERICK, Md. - Anna Margaret Anders Croghan, 85, died Monday, June 19, 2006, at her home in Frederick, with her loving family at her side. She was the wife of Michael J. Croghan, of 58 years of marriage.

Born Jan. 13, 1921, in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Guy and Virginia "Burke" Anders.

Mrs. Croghan was a graduate of the Frederick High School class of 1937. She furthered her education at the Visitation Academy Business School of Frederick, graduating class of 1938.

Mrs. Croghan was active in the community, both in the Frederick Lioness Club bowling league and working at Farmers and Mechanics Bank as a bookkeeper.

Mrs. Croghan and her husband worked together at F&M Bank for several years, and as a married couple also worked together operating the Hotel Frederick on Market Street for 24 years.

They both shared a love for horses, riding and their many trips traveling throughout the United States.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Croghan is survived by her five daughters, Ann Calkins and her husband, Jack, of Piscataway, N.J., Jane Jones and her husband, Bill, of Baltimore, Ellen Lewis and her husband, Wesley, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., Nancy Cleary and her husband, John, of Ireland, and Laura Metcalf and her husband, Gene, of Frederick; and six grandchildren, Christopher and Kevin Calkins, Sean, Sara and Nathan Jones, and Katie Hendrickson. She also is survived by one sister, Jeanette Ott of Adamstown, Md.

Mrs. Croghan was preceded in death by her first husband, Lt. Lloyd Herbert, who was killed in action during World War II.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.

Graveside services will be Friday at 1 p.m. in Mount Hope Cemetery, Woodsboro, Md. Pastor Michael E. Watson will officiate.

David G. Messmer Sr., 59


JUNE 12, 1947-JUNE 16, 2006

David George Messmer Sr., 59, of Hagerstown, died Friday, June 16, 2006, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born June 12, 1947, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late George Milton Messmer and Helen Scharff Messmer.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by one daughter, Michelle Payne of Baden, Pa.; one son, David G. Messmer Jr. of Monaca, Pa.; two sisters, Frances Mosser of Pineview, Ga., and Margaret Kriger of Glenwillard, Pa.; one brother, John M. Messmer of Burlington, Iowa; and five grandchildren.

Services and burial will be private.

Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.




Clyde T. Norris, 98


MAY 20, 1908-JUNE 20, 2006

LITTLE ORLEANS, Md. - Clyde Theodore Norris, 98, of Divide Ridge Road, died Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at Devil Manor in Cumberland, Md.

Born May 20, 1908, in Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Frederick J. and Anna Belle Hoopengardner Norris.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Norene Creek Norris, in 1988.

He retired from Grove Construction as a heavy equipment operator.

He attended Pleasant Grove Christian Church in Warfordsburg, Pa.

He is survived by one niece and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Celeste Gunther, Orentha Shafer and Jessie Joy.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, Hancock. The Rev. Denver A. Plessinger will officiate. Burial will be in Piney Plains United Methodist Cemetery, Little Orleans.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.




James J. McLaughlin, 85


FEB. 8, 1921-JUNE 19, 2006

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - James J. McLaughlin, 85, of 3567 Fox Hill Drive, died Monday, June 19, 2006, in Chambersburg.

Born Feb. 8, 1921, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Alexander and Marie Ennis McLaughlin.

He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II.

He was a member of Corpus Christi Church in Chambersburg.

He is survived by one niece, Susan J. Papouschek of Chambersburg; one nephew, Anthony F. Papouschek III of Chambersburg; and one grandnephew.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Jane M. Papouschek.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at a future date at St. John Bosco Church, Hatboro, Pa.

Burial will be in Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, Philadelphia.

There will be no visitation.

Josephine M. Fennel, 94


OCT. 29, 1911-JUNE 20, 2006

Josephine Marie Fennel, 94, of Hagerstown, Md., died Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 29, 1911, in Messina, Italy, she was the daughter of the late Domenico and Filippa Geraci.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Ernest J. Fennel, on Sept. 3, 1973.
