Mail Call

June 20, 2006

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"Why can't our local newspaper honor a veteran in their obituary with a graphic (of the) American flag? Other newspapers do this as an act of patriotism to those who have served our country."

- Funkstown

(Editor's note - The Herald-Mail offers graphic items to be used with obituaries, but there is a fee that goes along with that.)

"It was a pleasure to hear 'The Star Spangled Banner' sung the traditional way by Alexis Baron. I got her name from one of the officials of the Suns. I was at the Wednesday, June 14, Suns game and she sang it. I hope this will continue in the future. Many times singers use their own rendition, and in my opinion it sounds very disrespectful. I just hope the traditional way will be regulation for the singers. "

"I believe The Herald-Mail has tried to make the public think that there will be no PUD housing off of Bower Avenue, when in fact they will not be voting on this until next Tuesday. It's pretty much a sure deal that they're going to pass it."

"I want to send a big congratulations to Ambrielle, No. 4. We are awfully proud of you. You did an awesome your first year of softball. Go, Allegany Dental, Washington County Girls Softball League champions. You girls rocked, and a big thanks to all the coaches. From Stephanie."

- Hagerstown

"I was just wondering if any of the County Commissioners ever read the Smart Growth Initiative that Gov. Parris Glendenning presented in 1997."

- Washington County

"I want to thank Valley Mall for the wonderful job they did for Mom and Me on Flag Day. Those who have registered their children for Mom and Me were treated to a special day by Valley Mall, by being in a parade, hearing Betsy Ross talk about her flag, given streamers during the parade to show and to spin. They were all given sunglasses, a free lunch that included a hot dog, side dishes, watermelon. It was a wonderful time and I really enjoyed it with my three children that I had brought to the mall (Raymond, Jessica, and Ashley). It was a great time and I think more people should sign up for this, and it's free."

"It looks like the Ravens are going to the Super Bowl this year. They just got the best quarterback in football, and Pittsburgh's quarterback just had a wreck. So you might as well get those Super Bowl tickets printed up for the Ravens."

- Boonsboro

"This is for the person from Hagerstown who's calling about the three pit bulls' non-stop barking in the back yard of their neighbors. There is something you can do about that. If you call Animal Control, Animal Control will come out and give them a warning. If it continues, they'll come out and give them a ticket for a fine. If it still continues, they will take the dogs away and have somebody judge to see if the dogs should be put down or not, or be taken away from their owners. A dog is not allowed by law to bark for more than 15 minutes at a time. If that's the case, then they're breaking the law."

- Hagerstown

"This is to the caller from Williamsport about the bridge between Maryland and West Virginia. The other day I spent $15,000 on a vehicle in Maryland, and probably $300 in accessories for it in Maryland, and I drove over the bridge to get back home. If you'll call with your name and number, I'll send you the 50 cents for using your bridge."

- Martinsburg, W.Va.

"This is a concerned person from Boonsboro, concerning this intersection that we have at the end of town. It's one of the most dangerous things for people to go through, and still no light. Every once in a while we see the tall barrels are up again, and maybe a truck or two, but there's been nothing accomplished. I'd like to know why and who's responsible to see that it isn't being done."

- Washington County

"This is in response to the person who complained about The Herald-Mail putting the red stickers on the paper regarding the survey in the Hagerstown and Frederick area. This survey is for social drinkers, and I happen to be a social drinker who is taking part in this survey. The survey is not to condone alcoholism in any way. The survey is to find out how many of your average social drinkers in the area risk drinking and driving, which could hurt people in the public. This is supposed to help."

- Hagerstown

"There's one thing President Bush did that I agree with. He did have the 153 executed. I do believe in the death penalty. If we didn't have this penalty, we'd be poorer than what we are, while giving these prisoners everything they want. I don't believe in these long trials, either, when there isn't one doubt that the person is guilty. It just takes a lot of our taxpayers' money."
