Colleen Cashell, executive director for USDA's Farm Service Agency in Washington County, said Monday that farmers can now nominate people from Local Administrative Area 1 to serve on the agency's county committee.
The area is all of the county west of Interstate 81. Nominations can be filed through Aug. 1 at the FSA office in Suite 107 at 1260 Maryland Ave., Hagerstown. The election will be this fall.
The committee helps make decisions to administer federal farm programs offered here and helps ensure programs serve local needs. Plus, it makes decisions on such issues as commodity price support loans and payments, conservation programs and disaster payments. Producers who live here and participate or cooperate in FSA programs may be nominated.
You can nominate yourself or others. Groups representing minorities and women may nominate candidates.
USDA will mail ballots to eligible voters by Nov. 3. The winner takes office in January.
