Squirrel blamed for power outage this morning

June 19, 2006

About 1,000 Hagerstown Light Department customers lost power this morning when a squirrel got into a substation and knocked out power, Karl Kohler, manager of Hagerstown Light Department said.

The outage occurred at about 6:30 a.m. when the squirrel got into the Fairgrounds Substation and knocked out power to customers north of the 100 block of North Potomac Street and east of Pennsylvania Avenue, he said.

He said there were probably some customers affected outside that scope, but power was restored at about 7:30 a.m. after crews switched load to other stations to restore power.

The Fairgrounds Substation was offline and being repaired at about 9 a.m.
