Pereschuk, Hartnett win Tantillo 5K titles

June 18, 2006|by ANDREW MASON

After the fight they had to the finish line Saturday morning at the Hagerstown YMCA's Vince Tantillo Memorial 5K Run, it was almost hard to believe training buddies Chris Pereschuk and Doug Oates were still speaking to each other.

Pereschuk, 25, of Greencastle, Pa., won the race in 16:13.9. Oates, 27, of Hagerstown finished second by less than a second in 16:14.7. Bret Mower, 35, of Greencastle was a distant third in 16:55.6.

"Doug and I just decided to go out together, push each other and see who had it in the last half mile," said Pereschuk, who ran at North Hagerstown High and Hagerstown Community College. "And that's what happened."

With a half-mile remaining, Pereschuk pulled ahead of Oates for good.

"I had about 4 seconds on him," Pereschuk said. "But he came back on me. He surged at the end."

Pereschuk achieved his goals of improving on place (second) and time (16:47) from last year's Tantillo 5K. His time Saturday was especially impressive because this year's course was lengthened by about 100 meters to make it an officially certified 5K (3.1 miles).

"My goal was to go sub-16:20," Pereschuk said. "But when I found out the course was longer, I thought it might not be possible."

The top two females also managed to cover the longer course in less time than they needed last year.

Jennifer Hartnett, 28, of Hagerstown led from start to finish, winning in 19:04.1. Tammy Anderson, 31, of Hagerstown was the runner-up in 19:29.2, and Angie Rhoderick-McKinley, 23, of Funkstown was third in 19:50.6.

Jeff Delauter, 45, of Clear Spring successfully defended his Masters (40-and-over) title in 17:45.2.

Margaret Horioka, 51, of Williamsport was the women's Masters champ in 25:31.0.
