Social Services luncheon pays tribute to volunteers

June 16, 2006

Volunteers with the Washington County Department of Social Services Adult Services Unit were honored at a Volunteer Luncheon at the Fireside Restaurant on April 28.

The theme of the luncheon was "Volunteers Make a Difference Every Day!"

The luncheon recognized volunteer representative payees and shopping volunteers who assist disabled vulnerable adults.

Volunteer representative payees manage the statutory benefits, such as Social Security checks, for disabled people who do not have other relatives and/or friends who are able and willing to assist them with paying their bills.

Volunteer representative payees are Jean Moales, volunteer coordinator, Betty VanLaningham, Joyce Stanley, Linda Sappington, Michaela Whitaker and Rex Marshall.

Shopping volunteers buy personal hygiene supplies for people with HIV/AIDS, using funds donated to the agency.

Shopping volunteers are Betty Sundstrom, Nell Stewart, Lois MacCumbee and Joan and Leo Komorowski.

The money donated is raised primarily through the Maryland Correctional Institution's AIDS Walk.

The volunteers were thanked for their dedication by David Engle, director of WCDSS; Melissa Cline, acting assistant director of ACFS; John Kenney, program manager, Adult Services; Anne Bushong, Adult Services supervisor; and Linda Crone, representative Payee Advisory Board member.

Carol Suker, social worker in Adult Protective Services, read an inspirational poem, "Caring Is Always in Season."

Each volunteer was given a token of appreciation.

The local Department of Social Services is a field office of the Maryland Department of Resources.
