Mall to host classic cars

Visit Valley Mall on Saturday, June 17, for an evening of music, fun, games and classic cars. Check out the hot wheels beginning at 5 p.m.

Approximately 200 to 300 roadsters will be on hand for viewing until 9 p.m. The cars will be set up in the JC Penney parking lot. Fifty-fifty drawings will be offered, along with a DJ playing '50s, '60s and '70s music.

Those wanting to participate in the car show must pay a fee of $2. Money from this event will benefit "Dream Come True," which assists terminally ill children.

Concert plannedin woman's memory

A concert in memory of Jane T. (Flory) Freedman, a well-known children's book author and illustrator and the sister of Hagerstown resident Mrs. Lucy T. Edmunds, will be held at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts on Sunday, June 25, at 2:30 pm.

The concert will be presented by pianist Jason Paul Peterson. Selections will include two large works: Four Impromptus, Opus 90, by Franz Schubert and Kreisleriana, Opus 16, by Robert Schumann.

Mrs. Freedman, whose pen name was Jane T. Flory, wrote and illustrated more than 50 children's' books, including "The Liberation of Clementine Tipton" and "It Was a Pretty Good Year" in addition to being director of the evening division of the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, Pa., from 1960 to 1973.

Peterson was awarded a grant from the Chopin Foundation of the United States at age 17, and became the first ever four-time recipient of the award.

He holds a bachelor of music degree with high distinction from the Eastman School of Music and a master of music degree with highest honors from the University of Texas, Austin, where he held a professional development award and teaching assistantship in chamber music and accompanying.

Presently he is enrolled in the Doctor of Music program at the Peabody Conservatory and holds assistantship in piano teaching. For more information on this honorary music event, please contact 301-739-5727.
