Sword trial begins in Berkeley County

June 15, 2006|by ROBERT SNYDER

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Olin Hess testified that he had been awakened from a deep sleep only to enter a nightmare on the night last year he battled a youth who allegedly attacked him with a sword in his apartment.

"Me or him," said Hess, 61, as he described Wednesday in Berkeley County Circuit Court his effort to grapple in the early-morning hours of March 15, 2005, with a young man wielding a sword who allegedly kicked in the apartment door of Hess's housemate and slashed her arm.

"It got to that point - me or him," Hess said.
