Roxbury correctional officer struck in the face by inmate

June 14, 2006|by PEPPER BALLARD

A Roxbury Correctional Institution officer was struck in the face by an inmate Friday and transported to Washington County Hospital for treatment, said George Gregory, Maryland Division of Correction spokesman.

The name of the dietary correctional officer and inmate were being withheld pending the completion of an investigation into the incident, Gregory said. The inmate has not been charged, he said.

Before he was assaulted, the officer asked the inmate if he could see his identification card at the prison dining hall about 4 p.m., Gregory said.

"The inmate assaulted the officer by striking him in the face," Gregory said. "Another officer observed the situation and called for assistance."
