Squirrel causes power outage in Pa.

June 14, 2006|by ERIN CUNNINGHAM

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - A squirrel that entered an Allegheny Energy Inc. substation Tuesday afternoon caused a power outage that affected 3,612 customers.

Power was out in areas of Franklin and Fulton counties from about 4:30 p.m. to 7:28 p.m., spokeswoman Hollie Plevyak said.

The squirrel that entered the McConnellsburg substation was killed. It was unclear what the squirrel did to cause the outage, but Plevyak said it must have triggered something with the power lines.

"We don't know exactly what caused it, but the whole thing was caused by a squirrel," she said.
