Annual Long Meadow fireworks canceled

June 14, 2006

There will be no fireworks at Long Meadow Shopping Center in observance of Independence Day this year, said Debra Hunt, the shopping center's marketing manager.

Last year, the fireworks display was put on from what was Garry Shank's farm, which is being developed across Leitersburg Pike from the shopping center, she said.

"It's not a cornfield anymore," Hunt said.

Hunt said she is "very grateful to the Shank family, Shank farm" for allowing the shopping center to use the field for the displays over the years.

"We're sad, but grateful for all those years of support," she said.

The fireworks display at Long Meadow Shopping Center had been a tradition for about 40 years, she said. It was usually held a few days before Antietam National Battlefield's fireworks display, she said.

It usually lasted about 30 minutes and a local band, Spectrum, traditionally played for free, she said.

Long Meadow Shopping Center businesses and other businesses helped support the fireworks, she said.

"We are looking at different activities to take its place," Hunt said.
