One-lane bridge open while work continues

June 13, 2006

FUNKSTOWN - East Oak Ridge Drive in Funkstown between Oak Ridge Place and the one-lane Funkstown Bridge was closed to through traffic from about May 15 to June 7, but the work isn't over yet.

The project will run from Md. 65 to the bridge, and all work is scheduled to be completed by late June or early July.

"The road is open to through traffic but motorists should expect major delays," Ed Plank, director of the Washington County Highway Department, said Monday.

The town council last month voted unanimously to send a letter to Washington County officials informing them that if money should become available for construction to the bridge in the future, the council would support widening it to two lanes, while maintaining its historic nature.

Traffic crosses the one-lane bridge over Antietam Creek at Funks-town on Monday. The bridge, which was closed for work on a portion of East Oak Ridge Ridge Drive, has reopened. Ed Plank, director of the Washington County Highway Department, says work on the road is not finished and motorists should expect delays.
